Daydreams and Double-Dog Dares
I dare you to imagine your own success. Are you a writer? Imagine yourself at your very own well-attended book signing. An artist? You've received great reviews and people have begun to collect your work. Are you a musician? You're signed to a respectable label, you're playing to full houses of appreciative fans. Let yourself dream from time to time. Letting your mind wander in these positive ways can help you to determine what it is you really want for yourself.
Of course dreaming by itself is virtually useless, but I'm sure you already knew that. Daydreams combined with hard work and clever marketing will take you a very long way. The unpublished writer dreaming of well-attended book signings can accomplish his goals by self-publishing his work and organizing his own book signing tours. The lesser-known artist can organize his own art opening and hand deliver reception invitations to members of the press. Frustrated musicians can pool their resources, start their own record label, and sign themselves.
These may not seem like great strides, but you have to crawl before you walk. Typically, huge commercial success requires a lot of other people to buy into your work. Others are more likely to take a chance on you if you demonstrate dedication and believe in yourself. If you want something badly enough, you'll find a way to get it, and it may take a long time. A moment ago I dared you to imagine your own success. Now I double-dog dare you to accept that you have to start small.
