A Little about Phil Ochs

A recent e-mail from Ray:

Hi Susan,

I live in Philly, and last night I was early for a date, and went into a mall. I went into a bookstore (which is always dangerous for me as I always buy something) and on pure chance came upon you book. I am only a little way into the book, but it speaks directly to me.

I am a social worker in child welfare, but have also worked in a psychiatric hospital. I am bi-polar (I like to say, "The mental illness of choice among us creative types"), and a performing songwriter. Have started my first CD, but the credit union is giving me problems with a loan, so I have to figure a way around that hurdle.

Anyway, I really just wanted to say this is a great book. I know I will be recommending it and also buying as gifts to some of my "creative" friends.

By the way, check out the life of Phil Ochs. He was a performer/songwriter in the '60s in Greenwich Village. A friend of Bob Dylan, but never made it famous as Dylan, but still had his loyal audience, and he recorded for major labels. Many of his recordings are found on CD now. He was a manic depressive, and committed suicide at age 35 at his sister's house. I have known his sister for 15 years. She puts on Phil Ochs nights around the country, mostly along the east coast. When I was reading your chapter on suicide, I thought of Phil, who would have written many more great songs in addition to the ones he did write. Anyway, there have been two biographies written about Phil. I have to add that about 9 years ago, I got crazy one evening and took enough pills, the doctors said, to kill 4 people. Obviously, I am still here. Since that night, I have made many friends, written some very good songs, helped people, have been helped by people, etc. I seemed to have a guardian angel. And I am glad I did.

Thanks again for a very wonderful book.

Ray
