VOLUNTEER Opportunity
There's a pretty scary alternative-alternative book shop in my neck of the woods called Secret Sailor Books. Although I may or may not agree with their politics, I do see value in one volunteer program they operate. If you feel like doing some good, you might consider sending books of all kinds to the Midwest Pages to Prisoners project.
Here's what they have to say:
"Midwest Pages to Prisoners is a local, all-volunteer project that has answered requests for reading materials from prison inmates for over five years. We do not charge moneyall of our books and funds come from donations. The inmates may contact us directly, or through other books-to-prisoners programs from around the country, and the requests are variedfrom GED prep workbooks to foreign language novels.
We always need paperback books in relatively good condition (only some prisons will accept hardback). Popular requests are for: dictionaries and thesauruses, African-American history, Native American studies, GED materials, vocational-technology, business materials, philosophy, art and drawing, languages, fiction, and health and fitness. We also need envelopes, tape, markers, and postage stamps."
They fill about 100 orders a week and, if you'd like, you can send books and/or supplies to:
