Saucey words from Lance Latham

Dear Susan,

Last night I had my first book signing, at the Faubourg-Marigny bookstore in New Orleans, owned by my friend Alan. He let me stay the night at his place, and I noticed a signed copy of your book on his mantle. I started to read it and found I couldn't stop. I asked Alan if I could borrow it and he said yes.

I just wanted to tell you what a wonderful book this is! It's obvious you've been through your share of pain, but there's this underlying sense of humor that permeates your book from cover to cover (my personal favorite was reading of the "Fried Sugar Balls" recipe--my compliments to Melva Small).

The book signing I did was somewhat embarrassing. I'm trying to be a "serious" writer, but the only thing I've had published so far is erotica (read: pornography). Not that I'm a prude, but try to imagine yourself chatting-up people, while two feet away sits your story, containing sentences like, 'Dale grabbed the back of Paul's head and shoved his cock into his greedy, willing throat." I've been to some book signings where the author actually reads passages from his book, and I thank God Alan didn't ask me to. I would've crawled under the table if he's asked me. Writing pornography is one thing; reading it out loud is another. I must admit, however, that it is kinda fun to dream-up new synonyms for the word "penis." Try it sometime. See how many names you can come up with that don't sound cutesy-wootsy.

But I digress. Mainly I just wanted to say "good job!," and that your book means a hell of a lot to those of us out there who still are undecided about what to do with our lives and somehow feel less worthy than our Lexus-driving peers.

Sincerely,
Lance Latham
